My phone rings, waking me from my slumber. I note the time on my clock reads 4:00 p.m. and look to see who’s calling. The name “Babycakes” flashes across the front of my screen, indicating it’s Callie who’s on the other end. She’d probably wring my neck if she knew I input that as her nickname.

“Hey,” I answer groggily while wiping the sleep from my eyes.

“Can you tell me why Carter just waltzed into my office and asked for a job?” she asks without any preamble.

“And good afternoon to you, too, Peaches.”

“I’m sorry, Snookums. I hope you slept well,” she says sarcastically. “Now, can you please answer my question?”

I tell her about hiring Shining Knight—Carter specifically—to watch and monitor her from a distance. I explain to her that he doesn’t actually want a job there but needed a reason to scope out the place and get a lay of the land.

“Now I understand why he asked for a tour and where all the exits are located. He didn’t bother telling me you hired him to spy on me. And here I thought that was something only Simon would stoop low enough to do.” She says this with a hint of derision, as if I’m having Carter invade her privacy.

“For starters, I planned to tell you tonight when I come for dinner and drop off your car. Carter will be looking for people watching you who might have sinister intentions, not watching you. If yesterday wasn’t an accident, then someone was able to get to your vehicle while you were inside the fire station with me.

“By the way, I learned from Carter, who found out through the Arbaroa grapevine, that you no longer think it’s an accident either. You think someone from Cosmopol Construction may possibly be behind this. What happened to make you think that?” I ask, worried about her

“It wasn’t anything that specifically happened. It was something that was said. It could be related to the incident with my car or something else entirely.” She tells me the comment that Elise overheard in the background of a call.

“Then there are two possible suspects that have a motive to harm you. Is there anyone else I should have Carter keep an eye out for?” I’m almost afraid to hear her answer, and rightfully so after what she says next.

“There’s Cody Robinson, Jackson’s brother. I ran into him and his mother at the cemetery on the anniversary of Isabella and Jackson’s Death. I had finished saying my final goodbye, ready to move on with my life, when Mrs. Robinson overheard. She was upset and verbally chastised me for letting go of Jackson too soon. But it was Cody that had made me nervous.

“He physically grabbed my arm almost to the point of bruising and berated me for not sharing Jackson’s insurance payout with them. I had offered, but Mrs. Robinson—in her grief—had declined. I didn’t need or want it, so I put it into a trust for Izzy, along with Isabella’s insurance payout.
